John A. Kenney, son of ex-slaves, raised
himself up to become a medical doctor. As
the resident physician at Tuskegee Institute
in Alabama, he was the personal physician to
Booker T. Washington and George
Washington Carver.
In 1913 Dr. John A. Kenney and
Booker T. Washington founded
the John A. Andrew Memorial
Hospital, the first full service
hospital for African Americans
at Tuskegee Institute.
Dr. John A. Kenney founded the Journal
of the National Medical Association.
Pictured here is the editorial staff of the
Journal which was first published in 1909.
Seated is Dr. C.V. Roman, the first editor.
The Ku Klux Klan forced Dr. Kenney to flee
Alabama in 1923 for insisting that a new
Veteran's Hospital to be built for African
American soldiers , be staffed with African
American physicians and nurses.
Dr. Kenney relocated to New
Jersey where he built Kenney
Memorial Hospital, the first
hospital for African Americans
in Newark's Third Ward...
called "The Hill". The building
was designated a National
Historic site in 2004. To the
right of the hospital was the
Kenney family home.
